JUNE Weald Allotment Agricubes

In the last week we’ve emptied the first Agricube on plot #103 and are in the process of refilling it.  This was the cube that held salads, onions and carrots and as the salads had all bolted we decided it was time to rotate our crops.

Once again we compared the harvest from the cube with that from open ground crops planted on the same day.

On the left, as you look at the picture, is the open ground salad. On the right, the cube salad. These are Little Gem lettuces and I’d say that while the open ground lettuce is bigger, it also bolted faster than the cube one, so there may be an advantage to the cube sown salads in hot summers

In the second picture we have White Lisbon onions and carrots from an open ground sowing at the top of the picture and the same crops from the cube at the bottom of the picture. It’s obvious that the cube has underperformed here.

We’re refilling this cube with summer strawberry plants and the second cube is currently planted in the top with outdoor cucumbers and the sides have alpine strawberries and herbs – as that is more of a perennial planting it will be difficult to do comparisons with open ground crops, but it will be interesting to see if the cube performs better with perennials.
