HOW TO RENT A PLOT WITH BRIGHTON AND HOVE CITY COUNCIL

(- Update March 2007 - the council have re-opened the waiting lists for all allotments sites in Brighton and Hove and since the 1st march over 300 had registered an interest)

The Allotment Federation's advice is that if you are interested then do not get disheartened !, as there are always people leaving allotment plots throughout the year.

Here are the options in renting a plot,

  • Ring up the allotment officer at the council on 292225 and ask for an application form
  • visit the Brighton-hove.gov.uk website and search on allotments which will take you to the application details plus maps of the sites and locations. You can also download an application. To contact the allotments officer you can e-mail allotments@brighton-hove.gov.uk
  • Write to the Allotment Officer at the Council offices in  Bartholemew Square,Brighton.

The process is that you will be asked to choose your preferred site and then your next 2 choices, once this is returned to the allotment officer he will see  the plots available at the site and advise you on the plots available which you will then be given a time frame to view the site and choose your plot.

In visiting a site for the first time it is a good idea (and good practice !) to contact the site representative at the site and arrange to meet them at the site at a mutually convenient time. The allotment officer can provide the contact details of the site representative and the site representative can advise on the plots you are about to see and the work involved in the plot you will take on.

The current cycle of allotment lettings run's  like this,

February - Allotment site survey of all plots and they are rated , Red,Yellow (anyone rated these gets a weed notice) and green , depending on the level of cultivation.

March/April - the council Allotment officer follows up on the plot holders that received weed notices and any that have not improved will be given notice to quit.

May/June - Plots to be re-let are free to be worked

September/October - the rental renewal notices are issued and tenants have 30 days from issuance to pay the renewal fee or will receive a notice to quit.
