Agricube Tester - Sally Macgregor

Hi I am Sally and I work for South East Coast Ambulance Service and after a health scare 2 years ago I became very interested in growing my own produce. I started with herbs, tomatoes, garlic and sprouting seeds. I am keen to grow fruit and vegetables as organically as possible and am very concerned with getting the best quality seasonal produce in my system to stay fit, healthy, protect the environment and reduce my carbon footprint. It was with this in mind that I decided to get an allotment.  Shift work can be difficult and I thought a good regular supply of exercise and fresh air would do me good.

I have had my allotment now since October 2011 and have managed to clear a lot and planted onions, peas, broad beans. I already found rhubarb and perennial onions on the plot to nurture and nourish. I am not an experienced grower but am very keen. My plot is looking good so far, with the help of my partner (co worker) I have cleared loads, built a shed and a few compost heaps, and started some raised beds.  Endless battles with bindweed and brambles are tedious but every root I dispose of feels like a great victory. It’s been hard work but I have enjoyed it, the main challenge has been removing all the weeds, rubbish and scavenging wood.

I plan to grow a few everyday essentials and as a vegetarian that’s a lot in a limited space, hence my enthusiasm to test the agricube. I will try my hand at salsify, celeriac, sprouting broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, sprouts, artichokes, runner and borlotti beans, sweetcorn, radish, beetroot amongst the usual favourites. Actually my list is endless but best not to run before I can walk.

I look forward to the challenge of turning this little plot into a beautiful and bountiful space. So far I feel like every new shoot is a little miracle. I hope for many more.
