REGULAR EVENTS

  • RAGS (Roedale Allotments and Gardens Society)  meet the SECOND Monday of every month At 7.30pm in Laburnam Grove Common Room, Burstead Close, Hollingdean, BN1 7HXView on a map
  • RAGS AGM Wednesday 13th March, 7pm for 7.30pm, St. Richards Hall Hollingdean. Refreshments available including the locally made Barker’s Beers.
  • Tenantry Down Allotment Association Pub Meeting – meet on the first Tuesday of every month  at the Pub with No Name, 58 Southover St.  All Allotment holders and co-workers invited. Starts 8pm.  Locate  pub in maps.
  • Southern Counties Orchid Group – (For those interested in Tropical or Hardy Orchids).   Meet on the second Wednesday of each month at The Community Centre in Lancing, West Sussex at 7.30pm.  At most meetings there is a guest speaker, with slides, often there are plants for sale, and a raffle.  Tea, coffee and stronger drinks are available from the bar.  We also have a table show each month of plants bought in by members.

  • Right plant, right place and learn how to propagate – This course will cover one evening of theory followed the next week by a visit to a garden to see the plants in more detail. Please bring a camera to each session if possible. This is a ten session course but you can dip in for two sessions covering one topic. The course begins on Wednesday 17th April and the cost includes a light supper and a glass of wine.  See our website for further details.
  • On Saturday 20th April we will be joining the Sussex Prairie garden to deliver a workshop on propagation.  This inspirational garden has a wide range of perennials for us to propagate and you will have the opportunity to take plants home with you.  We will also look at a variety of propagation methods to give you the confidence to take cuttings all though the year.  This day also includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day. GROW AND TELL COURSES RUN BY AUTHOR KAY SEXTON – see below. Each session runs 11am-1.30pm and includes hands-on experience, comes with notes on the plants and techniques covered, and finishes at the WAG (Weald Allotment Gardeners) shop so people can buy seeds and supplies if they wish. Prior booking is essential. Please email growandtell@hotmail.com to reserve a place on a session or book through the WAG shop. £3.00 per person – all money goes to WAG for upkeep of Weald Site.

  • 21 April – Pest prevention and protection, Growing sweetcorn, tomatoes and squash from seed, Monthly tasks
  • 26 May – First crops from April sowings, Thinning, planting out, weeding and hoeing, Monthly tasks
  • 16 June – Successional sowing of summer crops, Greenhouse crops, Monthly tasks
  • 21 July – Watering and harvesting, Sowing for winter food, Monthly tasks
  • 18 August, Pruning stone fruit and espaliered apples and pears, Greenhouse pests and blights, Monthly tasks
  • 15 September – Harvesting maincrop potatoes and onions, Preparing for winter – what to manure, what to sow and how to compost, Monthly tasks
  • 20 October – Digging over ground and insulating greenhouses for winter, Overwintering crops, Monthly tasks

BHOGG Courses and events

  • Sunday Practical Workshops at BHOGG Plot – BY POPULAR REQUEST Ruth will run monthly sessions 11-1, to be followed by helping to get the plot ship-shape until late afternoon; bring lunch. As we now have a poly-tunnel, we will be able to do these whatever the weather! Practical skills like sowing & planting, soil preparation, maintenance, harvesting & storage & seed saving will be covered on this beautiful organic plot; also a chance to sow seed for your own gardens &  share in the harvest.2nd Sunday of the month : March 10th, April 7th, May 12th [after seedling swap so 1-3pm], June 9th,    July 7th, [break in August], September 8th, October 13th. We do ask that all participants join BHOGG
  • Seedling Swap and picnic – Sunday May 12th 11:00-13:00 Alan’s plot on Weald allotments: Bring your spare seedlings and swap for others. Very informal and an opportunity to relax and meet others on Alan’s beautiful plot. If you haven’t got any plants you can still come along – either make a donation on the day or bring some food and drink to share. Entrance by the main gate at the top of Weald Avenue and Alan’s plot will be signposted from there.
  • Harvest and BHOGG Seedling Sale – Sunday May 19th 11:00 -14:00 Preston Park: Reprise of last year’s successful event. Behind the Rotunda, Preston Park, Brighton.
  • Ashurst Organics trip – Sunday June 2nd, 10.30am – Visit to Ashurst Organic Farm near Plumpton. Bring a picnic. Meet 10.30 at the Level
  • How did your Garden Grow? & Harvest Supper Saturday Oct 19th, Phoenix Community Centre, 7.30pm – 9.00pm – Free to BHOGG members, non-members £5 waged/£2 conc payable on the door.
  • Herbal remedies for First Aid – Monday Nov 11th, Phoenix Community Centre,, 7.40PM – 9.15PM – Julia Behrens, medical Herbalist on herbal remedies for first aid. Free to BHOGG members, non-members £5 waged/£2 conc payable on the door.
  • BHOGG Christmas Party – Saturday December 7TH, Phoenix Community Centre, 7.30PM – 9.00PM

WHITEHAWK COMMUNITY FOOD PROJECT (WCFP) Established in 1996, the WCFP is one of Brighton & Hove’s largest and longest-established allotment growing projects. The WCFP is running several events in March at its 1-acre site on Whitehawk Hill which may be of interest to allotmenteers. For further info/booking/directions to site, please visit www.thefoodproject.org.uk:

  • Regular workdays – Sundays and Thursdays 12pm – dusk. You don’t need to have experience just come along and join in! Activities vary and you can do whatever interests you and what you feel capable of. This is a community garden with lots going on. Guidance and support will always be at hand if you need it. At the end of the day you can take home a share of whatever produce is available. The workdays revolve around picking, cooking, eating and sharing of food.

HARVEST TRAINING COURSES. Too many to list but all can be found on their website events page where they advertise their own, and other events. For Harvest training courses there are subsidised prices for people who can provide proof of benefits.
